What causes soil settlement?

A concrete floor does not usually sink due to the concrete itself, but due to changes in the underlying soil. When the load-bearing capacity decreases, the floor may sink or become uneven. Common causes of settlement include:
- Settlement after new construction or renovation
- Insufficiently compacted sand or soil layers
- Changes in groundwater levels
